The Case for Gender Equality

I am yet to see where and when men were ever equal to women. Regardless of the religious or cultural background, no one can confidently trace the origin of the so-called fight for gender equality that can never be. While this might not be to undervalue the worth of women in the society, it is actually stating that women have stooped so low to count themselves equal to women as the status of women in any sane society is higher than that of an average man.

Unfortunately, women have been made to subject themselves to elements of ridicule due to two primary reasons. The first of this reason comes from the masculine folks where the irresponsible men have neglected their duties of providing for the families, only for the women to take up this task especially for the sake of their children.

The other reason for this clamor for gender equality or inequality as the case may be is largely as a result of the first point made above. This has resulted in women failing to take proper care of the family as a result of looking for a means of livelihood. The effect of this on our society is evident – increase in the number of morally delinquent youths that has gone further to make our society even worse.

There is no doubting the fact that the good old days that had our mothers staying home to cater to their family produced a society we all could live in happily and the cry for gender equality was almost nonexistent. It is therefore encouraged that instead of shouting for equality between the sexes that would mean women are subdued to the level of men, we stand up to our duties and responsibilities and deliver as and when due.

The simple fact that men cannot go through labor pain establishes the somewhat superiority of the feminine gender over men. This is in addition to the nine months of pregnancy and a minimum of six months of exclusive breastfeeding that is in a sane society.

So my dear mothers, sisters, aunties, and wife, stop the cry for gender equality as you are probably higher in ranking and instead, embrace your primary duty of making the world a better place starting from building a good home.

Learn from the Mosquito

Proverbs 6:6 says “Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise”. As the world marks the World Malaria day on the 25th April, it is important that the world and Nigerians, in particular, look away from the singular evildoing of this determined, patient, and hardworking insect to learn from the mosquito and make adjustments where necessary.

Everyone knows that the mosquito and the female mosquito in fact, carries malaria, but no one cares to find out the reason for this. It is worth noting that the anopheles mosquito does not bite in a bid to suck blood due to its wickedness. The only reason why the mosquito visits you and does all it can to ensure it gets less than a teaspoonful of your blood is to survive and take care of its eggs.

While the write-up is geared towards praising the exploits of the mosquito, some of the amazing features of this tiny creature that should be embraced by many are briefly highlighted below.

How many times have you slapped yourself trying to kill a mosquito? Virtually everyone except the Sarakis can easily relate with this. This shows how determined the mosquito is to accomplishing its goal as it dares all even in the face of death, to get the blood it needs for its survival and that of its eggs.

If you use mosquito repellent, insecticide, or even have your generator on for your fan to blow mosquitoes away, then you know these guys are patient enough to wait for you to switch off your gen set before they invade. And if you are an insecticide or repellent user, these guys simply wait for two hours max and they are on your leg or arm.

Have you ever wondered why mosquitoes continue to come back even after flitting and killing hundreds of them daily? – PERSEVERANCE! No matter how many mosquitoes you kill the night before, you can be sure of having probably double the number the next evening, and this shows the spirit of perseverance this set of creation possess.

In addition to these three excellent and life-changing characteristics, mosquitoes have shown that only death can stop them from catering to their children and if only human beings can learn from these creatures, maybe we would have achieved more than we already have.

So if I am permitted to re-frame the words, “study the mosquito, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise”.

Over 730 days of Confusion and Tears

It was a sad day on the 14th of April 2014, when over 200 girls from the Government Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State were abducted by the terrorist group Boko Haram. Today makes it over 730 days, 17,520 hours, 1,051,200 minutes, or over 63 million seconds of confusion, tears, and all sorts of emotional hurts not only to the abducted girls or their relatives but also to every well-meaning being across the globe.

The story of the abduction was labelled with different attributes and while some still see it as a conspiracy or political stunt to oust the then GEJ administration, the fact that the over 200 hundred abducted Chibok girls is just a fraction of the lives that have been taken either in the form of abduction or killings by this miserable sect cannot be denied. It is even more evident now that a video showing some of the abducted girls was released by the terrorist group.

276 girls were reported to have been abducted with 57 of them escaping from the terrorist group. Since Boko Haram started its exploits in 2014, over 2,000 boys and girls are reported to have been abducted with only a fraction of this number recovered.

The major question here is not just whether the girls and other abductees are alive or dead, but what they have become if they are alive. A father of one of the Chibok girls reportedly got a call from the number of his daughter but on returning the call, a man that claims to be the husband to the owner of the phone answered and threatened the father never to call the line again. This gives a picture to what might be the current condition of these abductees and if they will ever be found.

The Bring Back Our Girls #BBOG group led by Dr. Obi Ezekwesili has consistently been at the forefront of the call to return the Chibok girls and other abductees of Boko Haram. Support for the agitation to return these girls has from people across the globe even as celebrities and the first lady of the United States giving her backing to the return of these girls.

Videos of the abducted girls being converted to Islam have surfaced, and this is just a very insignificant impact of what could be a result of over 2,000 boys and girls kidnapped by a terrorist group. If these girls have been married, impregnated, or even made to bear offsprings, then we might be looking at an even bigger impact.

One can only imagine the pains and anguish passed through by the parents, siblings, and loved ones of the Chibok girls and other such abductees and pray that these girls are brought back to their homes and rehabilitated to be able to live the lives they have always dreamt of and become good citizens of Nigeria.

It is a collective responsibility of governments of all levels and the citizenry to be conscious of happenings in their community and continuously strive to have a safe and secured Nigeria for us and the unborn generation especially for those of us that do not have any other country to run to.
